Brookfield Spindles & Speeds: How to Choose the Right Setup for Your Material.

Spindle Hang on the Viscometer

“Torque the Talk!”
How to Nail Spindle & Speed Selection Like a Pro

Choosing the right spindle & speed starts with knowing your fluid’s attitude 😎 — is it runny, gooey, or chunky?

Let’s break it down by Brookfield viscosity ranges:

📊 Brookfield Standard Viscometer Ranges

Type

Min (cP)

Max (cP)

Sample Personality

LV

15

2M

Like ink, milk, light oil – easygoing

RV

100

8M

Think honey, lotion, sauce – more body

HA

200

20M

Gels and creams – thick but flowy

HB

800

80M

Asphalt, grease – absolute unit! 💪

🔍 Note: “M” = million centipoise (cP)

💡 Too thin for even LV? That’s a job for ULA – the Ultra Low Adapter superhero for water-light liquids!

🥄 Too thick and your torque goes “overload”? Time to size up to HA or HB!

📏 Always check torque readings: aim for 10–100% to stay in the sweet spot!
🧪 Use ULA for anything below 15 cP!

Aim for 10%–100% torque range for accurate viscosity readings
(Too low? Too high? Adjust your settings!)

⚙️ Use AUTO RANGE on DV2T or DVNext to suggest ideal spindle/speed
It saves time and avoids trial & error.

🔁 Switch spindle or speed if torque is out of range
Remember: Low viscosity = smaller spindle or higher speed. If torque is out of range, switch spindle or speed accordingly.

🧪 Testing water-like samples? Use a ULA (Ultra Low Adapter)
Use ULA (Ultra Low Adapter) for water-like or low-viscosity samples used with any standard Brookfield Viscometer and Rheometer to make accurate and reproducible measurements on low viscosity materials

Because even LV spindles struggle below ~15 cP. ULA can measure as low as 1 cP — ideal for ultra-thin liquids.
